My Secret Struggle Is Not So Secret Anymore

It's not a secret anymore because I am going to share it with you. I'm going to share because I would like lots of feedback.

I struggle with my devotions. Oh how I want them. Oh how I long to have that wonderful intimate time with my Lord to be revitalized and nourished. But every time I sit down I don't know what to do. I pray and then just sit there.

Do you guys have any devotional books that you use? This is weighing heavy on my heart. I would appreciate any tips or suggestions you may have.

Thanks and God bless!

  1. I struggle with this, too.

I always think a devotional book will help.

Josh encourages me that all I need is the Word. That I need to just focus on the Bible alone.

Kristin from church says she finds studying the Bible easier if she's away from home so that way she's not thinking about housework and what not. Maybe occasionally Derek could watch the kids while you went somewhere and had time alone.

I'm going to ask Josh to do that for me.

  2. I think nothing but the Word of God is best. I like the One year bible because I don't have to be at a loss for what to read that day. It is broken down for me. N.T., O.T, Psalm and a Proverb or two. If you can allow yourself to not get caught up in the legalism of having a reading each day. The first time I read through I just read the next day I was on no matter what day it was. It took me almost two years. The next time I read through I read only the day that it was when I was reading. Now, I'm loving getting in the word so much that I do it every day (with whatever schedule or illness exceptions there will be.)
Before I read that I start with reading the day of 31 Days of Praise by Ruth Meyers because she just gets my heart in the right place....a place of praise!
Typically, I'll keep a pen and a journal close by to write questions or observations from the my time in the Word.
This has been my routine for a while. Hope it helps!
Also, with having kids around. I always tell them that I'm reading the Bible and need to be left alone. Great thing for both of us!
